📍Huaqing Palace (First Entrance Ticket Included)⭐️4.7/5
🏯Huaqing Palace (Huaqing Hot Springs & Lishan Mountain) is located 30 km east of Xi'an, adjacent to the Terracotta Warriors.
📍With its ancient, unchanging hot spring resources and numerous historical events, it has gained international fame and has become a landmark of Tang Dynasty cultural tourism in China.
💡【Highlights of the Palace】
▲ Huaqing Palace has a long history – Successive emperors from the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties built imperial retreats here. The site features the Tang Imperial Hot Springs Museum, the Five-Room Hall (Xi'an Incident site), Jiulong Lake, Furong Lake scenic areas, the Tang Pear Garden Museum, and iconic architectural structures such as Feishuang Hall, Wanshou Hall, Changsheng Hall, Huanyuan, and Yuwang Hall.
📜▲ The Hot Spring Ode Stele
The Lishan hot springs have been developed and utilized early in history and were favored by emperors, earning the title of “The First Imperial Spring of the World.”As early as 6,000 years ago during the Yangshao Culture period, the Jiangzhai people had already started using the Lishan hot springs. The Hot Spring Ode Stele in the scenic area is 154 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 19 cm thick, with a coiled dragon motif at the top and a trapezoidal base.It was inscribed by Yuan Chang, a governor of the Northern Wei Dynasty, describing the hot spring as “the natural elixir, the original medicine of heaven and earth.”
📜▲ Tang Imperial Hot Spring Museum
This is the Bath Site Depicted in Chang Hen Ge
After the An Lushan Rebellion, only a few remains of the original structures were left.In 1982, while constructing the “Guifei Pavilion,” the Lintong County government accidentally discovered the Tang Dynasty bathhouse remains. After excavation and restoration, it was transformed into the Tang Huaqing Palace Imperial Hot Spring Museum. This bath pool is small and delicate, with a unique design, measuring 3.6 meters in length and 2.9 meters in width, resembling an oval shape. The pool walls are entirely built from bluestone, featuring a two-layer platform structure composed of 18 sets of curved stones.Inside the pool, there is a long stone exclusively for Yang Guifei’s bathing, engraved with the character “Yang.”In the center of the pool bottom, there is a water inlet with a diameter of 10 cm.A white jade lotus pedestal was unearthed here, with a lotus head connected to a sprayer above and a ceramic water pipeline linked to the main water source below. The hot spring water, propelled by natural pressure, flows through the pipes and sprays from the lotus head, creating a mist similar to modern-day showers.Adjacent to Guifei Pool to the east is the imperial bath exclusively for Emperor Xuanzong of Tang.During the Tang Dynasty, the pool was topped by Jiulong Hall, with nine white jade-carved dragons outside the hall spouting water. The pool has a realistic lotus-shaped layout, hence also called “Lotus Bath.”
📜▲ Xi’an Incident Site
The Five-Room Hall in Huaqing Palace was the site of the Xi'an Incident. To this day, the glass windows and walls of the Five-Room Hall still bear bullet marks from the fierce battle during the coup. The office furniture, including desks, chairs, beds, sofas, teapots, stoves, carpets, and telephones, have been restored to their original state.
Historical Events
📜▲ The Beacon Fire Trick
In 779 BC, King You of Zhou obtained the beautiful concubine Bao Si, but she never smiled. To amuse her, the king conspired with his treacherous minister Guo Shifu and lit the beacon fires on Lishan Mountain. The feudal lords, seeing the beacon fire, rushed with their armies to protect the king. However, King You revealed, “I lit the fire just to make the queen laugh,” and upon hearing this, Bao Si finally smiled. The lords, realizing the deception, returned home in anger. Seeing King You’s foolishness and the loss of loyalty among his people, the Quanrong tribe seized the opportunity to invade. When the enemy approached, King You desperately lit the beacon fire again, but this time, no lords came to his rescue.King You and Bao Si fled to the foot of Lishan Mountain but were killed by the Quanrong forces. This incident gave rise to the famous idioms: “A smile worth a thousand gold,” “A smile that lost a kingdom,” and “The Beacon Fire Trick. The very beacon fire platform mentioned in this tale still stands on the highest peak of Xiu Ridge in Lishan at an altitude of 913.6 meters.
📜▲ Su Dongpo’s Poems on Lishan

🏛️Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum (Terracotta Warriors)⭐️4.9/5
The Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum, also known as the Terracotta Army or Qin Warriors. It consists of burial pits accompanying the Emperor's Mausoleum, forming the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Museum.
🛡️The Qin Terracotta Warriors are renowned as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
📍More than a thousand life-sized terracotta soldiers have been unearthed here, each with unique facial features and expressions. These sculptures are a shining gem in the history of Chinese ancient art and have been hailed as one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
Historical Background
Qin Shi Huang began constructing his mausoleum at the age of 13, employing 720,000 workers over a span of 38 years.By the time of Qin Shi Huang’s death, the mausoleum was still unfinished and was completed by his successor, Qin Er Shi, after more than a year of additional construction.According to legend, Qin Shi Huang spent an enormous amount of human labor, resources, and wealth to construct an underground palace, with the Terracotta Warriors serving as its eternal guardians. The Qin Terracotta Warriors are a quintessential example of using figurines as substitutes for human sacrifices in burial rituals. The extraordinary scale and realism of the Terracotta Warriors can be attributed not only to the craftsmanship of the artisans but also to the will and ambition of Qin Shi Huang himself.
Archaeological Discovery
In March 1974, farmers in Xiyang Village, Lintong District, Shaanxi Province, accidentally discovered fragments of terracotta figurines while digging a well. After more than a year of archaeological exploration and excavation, experts confirmed that it was a massive burial pit, now known as the world-famous Pit 1 of the Terracotta Warriors.Between April and May 1976, archaeologists discovered Pits 2 and 3 adjacent to Pit 1, each varying in size, shape, and the types of artifacts unearthed. Some scholars believe that Pit 3 served as the command center overseeing the warriors in Pits 1 and 2, historically referred to as the “Military Tent.”The Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum was officially opened to the public in 1979 on the site of these burial pits. The main attractions of the museum include Pits 1, 2, and 3, the Bronze Chariot and Horse Exhibition Hall, and various temporary exhibitions.
💡Visitor Guide
The museum ticket grants access to Pit 1, the other two warrior pits, the artifact exhibition hall, the Bronze Chariot and Horse Exhibition Hall, and the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum. The unearthed terracotta warriors are classified based on their attire, expressions, and hairstyles, including General Warriors, Infantry Warriors, and Chariot Warriors. Each terracotta figure has a distinct facial structure, hairstyle, body posture, and expression.Originally, the terracotta warriors and horses were vividly painted, but due to later fires and water damage, most of the colors have faded or peeled off.
📍Pit 1
Pit 1 was one of the first excavation sites in the scenic area. The pit measures approximately 230 meters in length from east to west and 62 meters in width from north to south.Based on excavation density, Pit 1 is estimated to contain around 6,000 terracotta warriors and horses, along with numerous bronze weapons.Pit 1 is also the most visually striking exhibit, displaying a massive formation of terracotta soldiers standing in the pit, each with unique characteristics. It is said that there are more than 30 different styles of beards among the warriors.Upon close examination, each soldier appears incredibly lifelike, with intricate details in their armor, facial expressions, weapons, and even the lines on their hands.
📍Pit 2 & Pit 3
Pits 2 and 3 are located on either side of Pit 1.Like Pit 1, these pits contain nearly 2,000 life-sized terracotta warriors and horses. They include different military units such as chariot soldiers, cavalry, and infantry, all arranged in an orderly formation.Although not as visually overwhelming as Pit 1, each pit serves a distinct purpose, making them equally worth visiting. The creation of the terracotta warriors was based on real-life observations, displaying meticulous craftsmanship. Each warrior has distinct attire, expressions, and a strong representation of the era.Bronze weapons such as swords, spears, halberds, crossbows, and a vast number of arrowheads have been unearthed in these pits. Remarkably, most of these weapons remain sharp after more than 2,000 years, showcasing the advanced metallurgy of the Qin Dynasty.
⚠️Travel Tips
The Qin Shi Huang Terracotta Warriors Museum is always bustling with visitors. To avoid peak hours, it is recommended to start your tour from Pit 3.After visiting the pits, tourists can take the scenic area's shuttle bus to the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum.
