Located at the foot of Western Hills, about 5 km from downtown, Dianchi is adjacent to Daguan Park and faces Yunnan Ethnic Village and Xishan Park across the water. Years ago, pollution caused severe algal blooms, but recent restoration efforts have greatly improved the water quality—red-billed gulls are now returning!You can walk along the beautifully constructed scenic road on the eastern shore of the lake—especially lively in winter when locals come to feed the red-billed gulls.Across the road is Xishan Forest Park and Haigeng Park. A cable car from Haigeng Park takes you straight to Longmen. From there, you’ll enjoy an incredible bird’s-eye view of Dianchi.

After buying your ticket at the main entrance and walking along the corridor for about 20 minutes, you’ll find the Lesser Stone Forest on your left. This area features smaller and gentler stone peaks. Amidst the dense stone clusters stands the famous Ashima Stone — a majestic formation resembling the graceful Yi girl, Ashima, as if she’s waving at you. 🎬The Ashima-shaped stone stands within the Eastern Stone Forest Scenic Area in Kunming. Ashima is a clever and beautiful girl from Yi folklore, known for her unwavering love with Ahei. The 1960s film Ashima brought her story to fame across China and abroad. Xizhou is located 18 km north of Dali Ancient Town, backed by Cangshan Mountain to the west and facing Erhai Lake to the east. It preserves a large number of Bai ethnic residences and is also the birthplace of Xizhou Baba (local baked snack). Strolling through the town, you’ll see elders in traditional Bai attire, snack shops selling Baba, and distinctive Bai-style homes—rich with ethnic charm. 🏘️🌾🎋

Quick Look at Xizhou

Zhengyi Gate is the west entrance of Xizhou Ancient Town. Entering here leads to the town’s old street. A few hundred meters in stands a 500-year-old banyan tree, so massive that several adults are needed to embrace it—considered a landmark of Xizhou. 🌳🧓📍

Not far into the town is Ziyun Mountain Temple, whose existing structures date back to the Qing Dynasty. Though rather dilapidated, it’s often a gathering place for elderly locals who bask in the sun there. 🏯☀️

Further inside is Sifang Street, a small square surrounded by shops and considered the town’s center. Most Xizhou visits begin here. This is the birthplace of the famous snack Xizhou Baba, and the flavor here is authentic. 🏘️🍘👣

Explore Bai-Style Residences

Bai-style residences are a major highlight in Xizhou. These homes span various periods, with the Yan and Yang residences being popular sites. Yan Residence, located at the southwest corner of Sifang Street, features the traditional Bai-style layouts of “three rooms and a reflection wall” and “four-in-one courtyard with five sky wells.” 🏯🏡🌀

The Yan family was once the most prominent among Xizhou’s “four great families,” and visiting their home offers a glimpse into their former wealth and status. Inside, you can enjoy Bai dance performances and sample their signature “Three-Course Tea.” If you’re interested in architecture and ethnic culture, tickets are available for entry. 🎭🍵🏮

Yang Pinxiang Residence lies in the east of Xizhou and has a layout similar to the Yan’s. Particularly noteworthy are the Yang family’s intricate wooden carvings and elegant gate structure. There’s also a large Yan Courtyard near Sifang Street for a quick overview of Bai architecture. 🪵🔍📸

Explore the Haixi Peninsula

Another highlight is the Haixi Peninsula, located to the east of Xizhou Ancient Town. Walk 3–4 kilometers east toward Erhai Lake to reach Haixin Pavilion, then a few hundred meters further lies Jingui Temple. There, you’ll find a green strip about 100 meters wide and 1 kilometer long, resembling a jade hairpin resting in the shimmering Erhai—locals call it “Haixi.” 🌿💧📷

This area sees few tourists but offers stunning scenery—blue skies, white clouds, green trees, rippling water, and waterfowl drifting about. It feels like becoming one with nature, and photos taken here look like paintings. 📸🎨🕊️

Travel Tips

Xizhou is not far from Dali Ancient Town. If you’re staying in Dali, you can take a car or bike ride there and back within a day. Alternatively, you can spend a night in Xizhou and head to Butterfly Spring the next day. 🚴🛏️🦋

When Dali Ancient Town first opened to tourism, the western section of Huguo Road was designated for foreign guests, with the Red Camellia Hotel as a foreign-oriented hotel. Thus, the street became a gathering place for international travelers and earned the name “Foreigner Street.”

Today, foreign tourists explore far beyond this street, covering the entire Dali Ancient Town. Foreigner Street has become a bustling commercial area, especially lively at night when bars like the popular Tang Dynasty Bar open for business. 🍻🎉

One of the grandest structures in the old town, it offers panoramic views of Cangshan Mountain and the ancient city below. It’s especially stunning when illuminated at night—a great photo spot. 🌃📷

The three-story tower stands above a passageway bearing a plaque inscribed with “Dali.” Taking a photo beneath it is a must-do for many visitors. 🧱📸Around Wuhua Tower is a flourishing art market, with shops selling calligraphy and traditional Chinese paintings. Shaxi was once a key stop along the Ancient Tea Horse Road. As the route declined, the town fell into obscurity—preserving its peace and rustic charm. A local saying in Northwest Yunnan goes: “Pass Dali, pass Lijiang, but don’t miss Shaxi.” ☕🏞️

Route: Cross the ancient Yujin Bridge over the Hehui River. Walk about 100 meters along the old path to reach the eastern village gate known as “Jiezi Gate,” made of adobe bricks—wide enough for only two horses. It retains the original style of fort gates on the Tea Horse Road. 🐴🌉Continue on to Sideng Street, the only surviving market on the ancient route, now the heart of Shaxi. The street is paved with red sandstone. To the east stands an ancient stage facing west, and to the west stands Xingjiao Temple facing east—they echo each other in design. 🏛️🧱Shops and inns surround the plaza, with three old alleys branching out in all directions. 🛖🛤️

Highlight: Xingjiao Temple. A preserved Bai “Azhali” Buddhist temple from the Ming Dynasty, this site is rich in murals and carvings. Free entry with ID registration. 🛕🖌️

Interestingly, due to its later development for tourism, Shuhe Ancient Town is much quieter and more rustic than Dayan Ancient Town.Stroll along the street from the beautifully carved and painted archway that reads “Shuhe Ancient Town” and follow the stone-paved road lined with shops all the way to the center of the town, which is also called Sifang Street.

In the past, Sifang Street was a place for horse caravans to trade in furs and leather goods.
