You can stroll along the lakeshore, take a boat ride, feed seagulls in winter, or ascend to Longmen (Dragon Gate) for a panoramic view—truly refreshing!
Located at the foot of Western Hills, about 5 km from downtown, Dianchi is adjacent to Daguan Park and faces Yunnan Ethnic Village and Xishan Park across the water. Years ago, pollution caused severe algal blooms, but recent restoration efforts have greatly improved the water quality—red-billed gulls are now returning! You can walk along the beautifully constructed scenic road on the eastern shore of the lake—especially lively in winter when locals come to feed the red-billed gulls.Across the road is Xishan Forest Park and Haigeng Park. A cable car from Haigeng Park takes you straight to Longmen. From there, you’ll enjoy an incredible bird’s-eye view of Dianchi.
After walking the scenic path, you can visit Yunnan Ethnic Village or take a boat cruise from Daguan Park at the lake’s north end. Boats range from rowboats to motorboats and speedboats—your choice!

12:30 Attraction: Stone Forest Scenic Area (Ticket included) 4.7/5 ⛰️
Located in Shilin County, the Stone Forest is one of Kunming’s top attractions. It’s a prime example of karst landscape, with dramatic limestone formations—spires, towers, mushrooms, and more—creating a surreal and beautiful scene. The scenic area is spread across multiple zones, with the Small and Big Stone Forest at its core. Naigu Stone Forest is about 12 km north, Dadieshui Waterfall is 29 km southwest, and Changhu Lake is 26 km southeast. Standard visits usually focus on the main Small and Big Stone Forest areas.📍The Greater and Lesser Stone Forests are located in the same area. After buying your ticket at the main entrance and walking along the corridor for about 20 minutes, you’ll find the Lesser Stone Forest on your left. This area features smaller and gentler stone peaks. Amidst the dense stone clusters stands the famous Ashima Stone — a majestic formation resembling the graceful Yi girl, Ashima, as if she’s waving at you. This is a favorite photo spot for many visitors. 📸
🪨In addition to the charming Ashima, the Lesser Stone Forest also features other formations like “Divine Horse” and “Towering Clusters,” each with unique shapes. This is the perfect time to test your imagination! If you find it challenging, hiring a guide is recommended — under their narration, the forest will come to life in surprising ways. 🎭🚗As you stroll slowly along the main road, you’ll pass by vividly lifelike formations such as Tang Monk Stone, Stone Prison, Phoenix Preening, and Ganoderma Stone. Each displays nature’s incredible craftsmanship in its own expressive form. 🌿
🚶♀️Continuing down the corridor, you’ll unknowingly enter the Greater Stone Forest, passing wonders such as “Two Birds Sharing Food,” “Rhino Gazing at the Moon,” “Lotus Peak,” “Stone Forest Paradise,” and “Stone Screen.” Feeling a bit tired? Take a short break at Lion Pavilion and enjoy the peaceful reflection of the stone forest in the Lion Pool. A moment of serenity. 🧘🌊After seeing so many stone peaks, you might feel a bit visually fatigued. Time for a change of scenery! Hop on a boat ride on Stone Forest Lake — as you float across the water, the mountains and water blend into one stunning view. All stress simply melts away. 🛶✨🚗💁♀️If you don’t feel like walking too much, no worries! Yi ethnic girls drive electric shuttles around the scenic area, and you can hop on and off at will. With a friendly driver, you might even hear some interesting local legends along the way. 📖🗺️Naigu Stone Forest is located 13 kilometers north of the main Stone Forest and is also known as the New Stone Forest or Mozhai Stone Forest. It features stone formations, White Cloud Lake, Stone Peak Mountain, and Fairy Waterfalls in the Valley. Compared to the main Stone Forest, this area offers a different aesthetic. 🌌
🖤The stone forest here is predominantly grey-black. The tall, dense stone pillars resemble castles, towers, and mushrooms. These primitive, rugged rocks rise like ocean waves into the sky, creating a powerful and awe-inspiring scene. Walking through the black stone formations feels like stepping into a wild and untouched world. 🌋
Ashima in the Lesser Stone Forest (No ticket required) 4.6/5 🌟
🎬The Ashima-shaped stone stands within the Eastern Stone Forest Scenic Area in Kunming. Ashima is a clever and beautiful girl from Yi folklore, known for her unwavering love with Ahei. The 1960s film Ashima brought her story to fame across China and abroad. This rock, resembling Ashima, is a beloved landmark where people remember her and relive the beautiful legend. 💕💞The Ashima stone is both in form and spirit a reflection of Ashima herself — full of emotion, as if longing for Ahei’s return. People project their remembrance of Ashima onto this formation, now seen as her embodiment. Crowds visit daily to pay tribute to this enduring symbol. 🙏

13:00 Attraction: Xizhou (No entrance ticket required) 4.5/5
Xizhou is located 18 km north of Dali Ancient Town, backed by Cangshan Mountain to the west and facing Erhai Lake to the east. It preserves a large number of Bai ethnic residences and is also the birthplace of Xizhou Baba (local baked snack). Strolling through the town, you’ll see elders in traditional Bai attire, snack shops selling Baba, and distinctive Bai-style homes—rich with ethnic charm. 🏘️🌾🎋
Quick Look at Xizhou
Zhengyi Gate is the west entrance of Xizhou Ancient Town. Entering here leads to the town’s old street. A few hundred meters in stands a 500-year-old banyan tree, so massive that several adults are needed to embrace it—considered a landmark of Xizhou. 🌳🧓📍
Not far into the town is Ziyun Mountain Temple, whose existing structures date back to the Qing Dynasty. Though rather dilapidated, it’s often a gathering place for elderly locals who bask in the sun there. 🏯☀️
Further inside is Sifang Street, a small square surrounded by shops and considered the town’s center. Most Xizhou visits begin here. This is the birthplace of the famous snack Xizhou Baba, and the flavor here is authentic. 🏘️🍘👣
Explore Bai-Style Residences
Bai-style residences are a major highlight in Xizhou. These homes span various periods, with the Yan and Yang residences being popular sites. Yan Residence, located at the southwest corner of Sifang Street, features the traditional Bai-style layouts of “three rooms and a reflection wall” and “four-in-one courtyard with five sky wells.” 🏯🏡🌀
The Yan family was once the most prominent among Xizhou’s “four great families,” and visiting their home offers a glimpse into their former wealth and status. Inside, you can enjoy Bai dance performances and sample their signature “Three-Course Tea.” If you’re interested in architecture and ethnic culture, tickets are available for entry. 🎭🍵🏮
Yang Pinxiang Residence lies in the east of Xizhou and has a layout similar to the Yan’s. Particularly noteworthy are the Yang family’s intricate wooden carvings and elegant gate structure. There’s also a large Yan Courtyard near Sifang Street for a quick overview of Bai architecture. 🪵🔍📸
Explore the Haixi Peninsula
Another highlight is the Haixi Peninsula, located to the east of Xizhou Ancient Town. Walk 3–4 kilometers east toward Erhai Lake to reach Haixin Pavilion, then a few hundred meters further lies Jingui Temple. There, you’ll find a green strip about 100 meters wide and 1 kilometer long, resembling a jade hairpin resting in the shimmering Erhai—locals call it “Haixi.” 🌿💧📷
This area sees few tourists but offers stunning scenery—blue skies, white clouds, green trees, rippling water, and waterfowl drifting about. It feels like becoming one with nature, and photos taken here look like paintings. 📸🎨🕊️
Travel Tips
Xizhou is not far from Dali Ancient Town. If you’re staying in Dali, you can take a car or bike ride there and back within a day. Alternatively, you can spend a night in Xizhou and head to Butterfly Spring the next day. 🚴🛏️🦋
Includes Experience – Pony Carriage Ride
Enjoy a pony carriage ride through [Xizhou Ancient Town] (following a rural scenery route). Located 18 kilometers north of Dali Ancient Town, Xizhou lies between Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. Along the way, pause amidst vast rice fields, breathe in the fragrant aroma of the crops, and travel leisurely through golden wheat fields with the sound of trotting hooves. 🐴🌾🎐
Activity Duration: About 1 hour
14:00 Attraction: Erhai Lake (No entrance ticket required) 4.6/5
Erhai Lake lies to the east of Dali Ancient Town, at the foot of the verdant Cangshan Mountain. This blue-hued lake is known for its stunning natural scenery and culturally rich lakeside villages. It’s one of the Four Great Scenic Spots of Dali. 🌊⛰️🏞️
One of Erhai’s most famous sights is Shuanglang on the eastern shore. From here, you can enjoy picturesque lake views as sunlight pierces the clouds and reflects off the water, creating the phenomenon known as the “Erhai Divine Light.” With the endless green mountains as a backdrop, this is a favorite spot for photographers capturing majestic landscapes. 📷🌅✨
Erhai Ecological Corridor (No Entrance Fee) 4.6/5
Nestled in the embrace of the Dali Basin, the 129-kilometer-long Erhai Ecological Corridor gracefully connects mountains, waters, and local culture. This living ecological scroll blends nature restoration zones, Bai ethnic villages, and wetland landscapes, offering visitors an immersive ecological observation experience. 🌾🌿🌄
In the early morning, walk along wooden boardwalks into the Sansheng Island Wetland and observe moorhens nesting among the reeds. Cycling enthusiasts are recommended to take the Yangnan Stream to Longkan section, where eucalyptus-lined paths often offer chance encounters with the crowned hoopoe bird. 🚴♀️🦜🌳
Birdwatching walls are specially set up along the corridor, turning the agile hunting scenes of herons into a live ecological theater. In late autumn, the pond cypress forests at Majiu Village gradually turn amber, creating a natural studio for photographers to capture seasonal change. 📸🍁🪶
Traditional Bai villages dot the route, preserving authentic scenes of daily life. The aroma of grilled milk fans wafting through white walls and gray tiles offers a sensory hint of intangible heritage. In the ecological monitoring zones, visualized data tells the story of underwater forest restoration. 🧀🏘️📊
It’s recommended to pause at Caicun Wharf at dusk, watching the sunset dye Erhai Lake a celadon green and feeling the timeless dialogue between Cangshan’s eighteen streams and the lake. 🌇🏞️🧘♀️
The corridor has no walls or boundaries—wear light sports shoes, bring binoculars, and explore slowly to truly feel the ecological rhythm of this plateau lake. 👟🔭🐾
Six types of educational interpretive systems within the reserve will help you uncover the ecological secrets behind each Erhai water flower. 🌼🔍📚

Dali Ancient Town lies at the scenic foot of Cangshan Mountain. Once the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms, it’s a place ideal for living. Locals work with the sunrise and rest with the sunset, tending flowers and basking in the sun. With pleasant weather and charming scenery, it draws countless visitors. 🏯🌞🌸
Daytime Must-Visit: Wander along Fuxing Road, a pedestrian street in the ancient town. Nightlife in the Ancient Town: At night, the town comes alive with charm. Streets are lit up with colorful lights, and bars, cafes, and craft stores buzz with activity—perfect for a relaxed stroll. You might enjoy a quiet drink with music in a pub, or step into a traditional teahouse to experience peaceful moments. 🍷🎶🏮
Foreigner Street (No Entrance Fee) 4.4/5 🌍📸
Originally named “Huguo Road,” Foreigner Street is a 1-kilometer-long east-west bluestone path located in Dali Ancient Town. At the intersection of Huguo and Fuxing Roads, you’ll spot an archway inscribed with the characters “Foreigner Street”—a popular photo spot for visitors. 🏞️👣
When Dali Ancient Town first opened to tourism, the western section of Huguo Road was designated for foreign guests, with the Red Camellia Hotel as a foreign-oriented hotel. Thus, the street became a gathering place for international travelers and earned the name “Foreigner Street.”
Today, foreign tourists explore far beyond this street, covering the entire Dali Ancient Town. Foreigner Street has become a bustling commercial area, especially lively at night when bars like the popular Tang Dynasty Bar open for business. 🍻🎉
The street is lined with various shops and eateries offering Chinese and Western cuisine, jewelry, antiques, tie-dye crafts, galleries, and Bai ethnic snacks and souvenirs. You can shop and snack along the way—though prices tend to be high. If it feels too pricey, jot down what you like and check other shops in the town for better deals. 🛍️🍢🎨
Wuhua Tower (No Entrance Fee) 4.6/5 🏯🌄
Wuhua Tower, located in Dali Ancient Town, once served as the reception hall for the Nanzhao Kingdom’s rulers. It has undergone several restorations, with the latest rebuild in 1998. One of the grandest structures in the old town, it offers panoramic views of Cangshan Mountain and the ancient city below. It’s especially stunning when illuminated at night—a great photo spot. 🌃📷
The three-story tower stands above a passageway bearing a plaque inscribed with “Dali.” Taking a photo beneath it is a must-do for many visitors. 🧱📸Around Wuhua Tower is a flourishing art market, with shops selling calligraphy and traditional Chinese paintings. Art lovers should definitely check it out. 🖌️🖼️

13:00 Shaxi Ancient Town (No Entrance Fee) 4.8/5 🏘️🐎
Shaxi was once a key stop along the Ancient Tea Horse Road. As the route declined, the town fell into obscurity—preserving its peace and rustic charm. A local saying in Northwest Yunnan goes: “Pass Dali, pass Lijiang, but don’t miss Shaxi.” ☕🏞️
Route: Cross the ancient Yujin Bridge over the Hehui River. Walk about 100 meters along the old path to reach the eastern village gate known as “Jiezi Gate,” made of adobe bricks—wide enough for only two horses. It retains the original style of fort gates on the Tea Horse Road. 🐴🌉Continue on to Sideng Street, the only surviving market on the ancient route, now the heart of Shaxi. The street is paved with red sandstone. To the east stands an ancient stage facing west, and to the west stands Xingjiao Temple facing east—they echo each other in design. 🏛️🧱Shops and inns surround the plaza, with three old alleys branching out in all directions. 🛖🛤️
Highlight: Xingjiao Temple. A preserved Bai “Azhali” Buddhist temple from the Ming Dynasty, this site is rich in murals and carvings. Free entry with ID registration. 🛕🖌️
During local festivals, Bai residents dress in vibrant costumes, play traditional instruments, and gather at the central square for singing and dancing performances—a joyful celebration. 🎊🎶👘Accommodation & Dining: Shaxi is small and walkable in an hour or two, but if time allows, consider staying overnight to fully enjoy its tranquil charm. 🏡🛏️The town offers affordable youth hostels and guesthouses. For meals, try local specialties like wild mushrooms, matsutake, and milk cakes from small eateries. 🍄🍚
After lunch, head to Shaxi Ancient Town. Shaxi is a truly ancient town, rich in historical charm, still retaining its old architectural features. Shuhe Ancient Town (No ticket required) 4.4/5
Shuhe Ancient Town is located to the northwest of Lijiang Ancient Town and was an important post station on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. The town is nestled against mountains and beside water, with a layout similar to Dayan Ancient Town. The houses are scattered in an orderly fashion, and the alleys are lined with gently flowing streams, creating a beautiful environment.
Interestingly, due to its later development for tourism, Shuhe Ancient Town is much quieter and more rustic than Dayan Ancient Town.Stroll along the street from the beautifully carved and painted archway that reads “Shuhe Ancient Town” and follow the stone-paved road lined with shops all the way to the center of the town, which is also called Sifang Street.
In the past, Sifang Street was a place for horse caravans to trade in furs and leather goods. Today, it is surrounded by various shops, and one can still sense the prosperity of those times.Following the stream beside Sifang Street upstream, past the Qinglong Bridge, you will find a clear and emerald green pool of water by the roadside, which is the source of the stream: Jiuding Longtan. The pool is home to a large number of rainbow trout, and the icy meltwater from Yulong Snow Mountain makes it a natural breeding ground for these fish.Next to the pool stands Longquan Temple, also known as San Sheng Palace, which is dedicated to Sun Bin, the patron saint of leatherworkers.
Climb up the small hill behind San Sheng Palace, and you will find a relatively open area that offers a great view of the entire ancient town. The Tea Horse Road Museum, located on Zhonghe Road within the ancient town, is definitely worth a visit.
The museum, originally part of the Mu Tusi’s “Shuhe Courtyard,” mainly introduces the history of the Tea Horse Road, including tea and horse trading, fur trading, and the origins of Shuhe leatherworkers, providing a brief understanding of Shuhe’s history.Additionally, the mural exhibition hall is a must-see, featuring the six-lay murals from Dajue Palace, painted during the Ming Dynasty. Although they are later than the Baisha murals, they are also exquisitely exquisite. The ancient town is not very large, with many restaurants and bars. You don’t have to worry about dining while exploring.
When you get tired, find a small shop and enjoy local specialties such as chickpea jelly, rice sausage, and three ways to eat rainbow trout. The ancient town, not restricted by conditions such as being a “World Cultural Heritage” site, has many guesthouses with unique architectural styles. If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of Dayan Ancient Town, consider staying here for a few days to experience the tranquility of Shuhe Ancient Town. The area near Old Sifang Street is a relatively concentrated place for accommodation.Unlike the hustle and bustle at the entrance of the ancient town, this place is relatively quiet. It is recommended to take a 3-4 hour walk around the area.If you still have energy and strength, you can exit the ancient town from behind San Sheng Palace and reach Baisha Ancient Town in a short distance. This is also a quaint and quiet town. While wandering around, don’t forget to admire the ancient and famous Baisha murals.
It won’t take too much time and won’t delay your return to the ancient town for accommodation.Take a bus to visit the important part of the “World Cultural Heritage” Lijiang Ancient Town, the tea-horse trade exchange place 【Shuhe Ancient Town】.
In the Nakhi language, it is called “Shao Wu”.Because the shape of the mountain behind the village is like a piled-up peak, the village is named after the mountain. It has become a “village under the peak” through the spread and variation of the name.It is one of the earliest settlements of the Nakhi people in the Lijiang Basin and an important town well-preserved on the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
