13:00 Scenic Spot

816 Project Scenic Area (First-tier ticket included) Rating: 4.7/5

Located in Baitao Street, Fuling District, Chongqing, this was China’s first self-designed and constructed underground nuclear materials base. Code-named “816”, it was approved by the Central Military Commission in 1966 as part of the “Third Front Construction” initiative.

Over 60,000 people participated in its 18-year construction.

It has a total excavated area of 104,000 m², with 18 main caves, over 130 guide tunnels, auxiliary tunnels, shafts, and corridors. The main cave is 79.6 meters high.

By 1984, 85% of civil works and 60% of installations were completed, with a total investment of ¥746 million (at historical prices).

Because of its massive scale and secrecy, it’s dubbed the “Three Gorges in a Cave”, “Underground Great Wall”, and “Buried Nuclear Jade”, with the three mystical traits: amazing, mysterious, and sacred.

Highlights:

102 Storage Pool: Featured in CCTV’s “Remembering” segment. Area: 1,326 m². Stores nuclear components and non-working blocks. 400 hanging buckets installed for long-term storage.

Tunnel No. 8: Located in the post-processing zone, lit dramatically to highlight the grand natural cave formations.

Reactor Base: On the 3rd floor of the reactor building. The glass corridor provides a panoramic view of the structure, giving a sci-fi-like experience.

Central Control Room: The command center showcasing the technological core of the facility.

Located on the 9th floor of the reactor, this area once housed China’s most advanced computer systems at the time. It served as the “heart” of the entire military-industrial cave complex and was the central hub for coordinating the entire nuclear fuel production process.

The 104 Nuclear Power Plant building stands 31.2 meters tall and 25 meters wide. The reactor here was a dual-purpose reactor designed for both nuclear material production and power generation. Following the principle of “production first, power generation second,” it utilized residual nuclear heat to generate electricity as a secondary function.

15:22 Wuling Mountain Grand Canyon (including first gate ticket) – Rated 4.5/5

Wuling Mountain Grand Canyon Scenic Area is located in Wulingshan Township, about 40 kilometers southeast of Fuling District, Chongqing. It is a national 4A-level tourist attraction, covering an area of 29.96 square kilometers with an average altitude of 1300 meters. The mountain terrain is dramatic and varied, with rich native vegetation—over 2,000 species of wild plants and more than 200 species of wild animals. The air is fresh and the ecological environment is excellent, featuring mountains, forests, springs, caves, waterfalls, cliffs, lakes, pools, gorges, pits, and crevices. The area is particularly renowned for its massive rift valley, a “scar” on the Earth caused by intense tectonic activity.

The site also boasts the world’s unique close-range reverse geological structure—Tianmen Wonder, shaped like a sharp blade with iron-like walls stretching for thousands of meters, earning acclaim from geologists worldwide.

Tourist Center:

Built to the standards of a national 5A-level scenic area, the Wuling Mountain Tourist Center is grand, elegant, and fully equipped. It includes the reception hall, a large square for gathering, and an eco-parking lot. The center covers nearly 200 acres, with a building area of 15,000 square meters.

Cloud Mist Pavilion:

Situated at an altitude of 1,200 meters and named for its year-round mist, it is a premier viewing platform. On clear days, visitors can see the Danzi Mountain Wind Farm in Wulong County, over 100 kilometers away. Looking down from the pavilion reveals the misty, picturesque canyon below—like stepping into a living painting.

Tianmen Cave Suspension Bridge:

Spanning a 2-kilometer area, this geological marvel of intersecting and reversing faults is sharp-edged and awe-inspiring. It’s been named one of the top 100 photo-worthy locations in China by National Geographic Magazine.

Yunmeng Stream:

A peaceful, idyllic stream area with fragrant blossoms and rustic villages. A perfect spot to rest, sample local cuisine, and soak in the serene rural charm.

Ancient Music Pavilion:

Located beneath a cliff and over a stream, this site displays ancient musical instruments of the Ba-Yu culture. It’s a living tribute to the region’s musical heritage, offering visitors an immersive experience of traditional performances.

Wishing Valley:

Beneath a sheer cliff, nestled among century-old trees and classic pavilions, visitors can drink “bowl-breaking wine” and tie their wishes onto the blessing tree for peace and happiness.

Dubbed “an ancient scar of the Earth,” this 1,500-meter-long fissure averages more than 300 meters deep, with a maximum depth of 600 meters and a narrowest point less than 2 meters wide. It is a spectacular result of millions of years of tectonic activity.
