Experience the 37th Qinhuai Lantern Festival
🏮Also known as the “Jinling Lantern Festival”, “Confucius Temple Lantern Festival”, or “Nanjing Lantern Festival”, the Qinhuai Lantern Festival is mainly held from Chinese New Year to the Lantern Festival each year. The impression of Qinhuai: bright lights shimmering, ten miles of bustling streets with ancient charm. Among the brilliant Qinhuai intangible cultural heritage items, the Lantern Festival is undoubtedly a shining star. Since the Qinhuai District resumed hosting the festival annually in 1986, it has grown significantly. In 2006, it was included in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage items, boosting the reputation of Qinhuai culture. Today, the folk tradition of “seeing lanterns at Confucius Temple during New Year” has become an essential part of celebrating the Spring Festival for Nanjing locals. 🎉🏮
🎊This year’s Lantern Festival centers around the Confucius Temple, Mendong district, and the Ten-Mile Qinhuai River cruise route, complemented by festive decorations around the temple area, with various themed lantern installations.
📍1. Core Exhibition Area of the Confucius Temple

Taihu Island is a must-visit spot in Yuantouzhu, with Taoist temples and stone carvings of both Taoist and Buddhist statues. If you climb to the top of Deer Peak on the peninsula, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the lake’s lush green shores. On clear days, you might even see elegant boat shadows on the lake, feeling the vast beauty of Taihu.
As a place for cherry blossom viewing, Yuantouzhu’s uniqueness lies in two features: first, the “water, land, and air” panoramic view of cherry blossoms; second, you can even enjoy cherry blossoms at night, where the blossoms and lighting blend together beautifully.Early cherries at Yuantouzhu usually bloom in early March, mostly single-petal or semi-double-petal varieties. The cherry blossoms are classified into early and late bloomers, with the early cherries having a one-week blooming period, and the late blossoms lasting 7-10 days. The blooming times can be affected by temperature changes, and the gap between early and late blooms can be anywhere from 5 to 12 days.
Typically, the best time for viewing cherry blossoms is late March when the Somei Yoshino cherries bloom. The exact blooming period depends on the weather, and if cold air occurs, it might delay the peak bloom. In summer, beautiful lotus flowers can also be enjoyed here.

Wuzhen is an ancient town in the northern suburbs of Tongxiang, known for its long history. The main scenic areas are divided into the West and East Ridges. You can enjoy the night view of the West Ridge, take a gondola ride, and watch folk performances — all unmissable experiences for visitors. It is also the filming location for the movie “Twenty Something” starring Huang Lei and Liu Ruoying.
The East and West Ridges are about 1.5 kilometers apart. If you want to visit both in one day, it’s recommended to arrive early at Wuzhen. You can first visit the East Ridge (2-3 hours), then after lunch, head to the West Ridge and enjoy the night view there. If you have two days, you can consider spending one day at each.
West and East Ridge Highlights:
You can wander along the stone-paved roads of the West Ridge all day, sampling local snacks like stinky tofu, Ding Sheng cake, and Gu-Sao cake, or visit cultural landmarks such as Zhaoming Academy and the old post office. Of course, don’t miss the chance to take a gondola ride to savor the water town experience. If time permits, don’t miss the West Ridge’s night tour. The water lanes, ancient bridges, and white walls are beautifully illuminated by lights. The experience of taking a gondola ride at night is especially enchanting. Afterward, enjoy a drink at a bar, or watch an outdoor classic movie or a flower drum opera — it’s a truly relaxing experience.
Compared to the West Ridge, the East Ridge is smaller but has a more vibrant local life.
Local residents still live here, and there are attractions like the shadow play theater, the Sanbai wine workshop, the Taoist temple, and the former residence of Mao Dun. You can also watch performances such as the “Fist Boat” (fighting on a boat) and the “High Pole Boat” (climbing bamboo poles on a boat), which offer a richer cultural and historical experience. There are shuttle buses between the East and West Ridges.
Local Delicacies and Souvenirs:

The Hanlin Mansion Hotel and Fengyuan Restaurant in the East Ridge, and Yusheng Restaurant and Soy Sauce Duck Flavor Restaurant in the West Ridge, are all popular dining spots. Don’t miss trying local snacks like stinky tofu, Ding Sheng cake, and Gu-Sao cake, found in the alleys and streets.

There are also many hotels and inns outside the scenic area, which are relatively cheaper than those inside.
West Ridge (Entrance Ticket Included) 4.5/5
The West Ridge is the essence of Wuzhen. Although it is one of the main scenic areas along with the East Ridge, it lacks the hustle and bustle of the East Ridge. Everything here has been renovated and designed, with cafés and bars lining the streets, giving the area an artistic atmosphere.A night gondola ride in the West Ridge is highly recommended. The reflections of the lights and the sound of the oars create a mesmerizing atmosphere of the Jiangnan water town.
The Xishi River runs through the West Ridge from east to west, and the intersecting small rivers divide the area into many small islands, connected by dozens of unique ancient stone bridges. The old buildings are built along the water, showcasing typical Jiangnan water town views of small bridges and flowing water. In addition to the attractions you can visit, there are many charming small shops, cafés, and bars in the scenic area, perfect for relaxing and browsing slowly.
You can explore the West Ridge on foot, or take the shuttle bus or boat within the scenic area.
If it’s daytime, take a stroll along the West Ridge Main Street on the north bank. The Zhaoming Academy is where Prince Zhaoming Xiao Tong once studied, and now it’s a library. You can read a book here or leave a note on the message wall at the entrance, sharing your thoughts. At the “Three Inch Golden Lotus Museum,” you can see hundreds of pairs of bound foot shoes. From the east side of the south bank, you can smell the soy sauce aroma from the Xuchang Soy Sauce Workshop from a distance. You can see the large outdoor vats used for making soy sauce, or buy some as souvenirs. Near Qianshan Bridge, there’s a street called Nühong Street with many shops selling hand-embroidered products and scarves. Girls might want to shop for little trinkets here, then head to the old post office across the river to send a postcard with a Wuzhen postmark to friends and family. It’s artistic and romantic.
The night view of the West Ridge is one of the reasons many people fall in love with this place. At night, the bridges and houses of the ancient town light up, and sailing in a small boat through the reflections feels amazing. The photos taken here also have a unique charm.Additionally, there are several activities you can participate in. On clear nights, the old theater square shows classic black-and-white films like “The Adventures of Sanmao” and “Tunnel Warfare” using vintage projectors. Watching these films while sitting on long benches gives a special feeling.
If you are interested in traditional arts, you might want to visit the Water Market to hear the Huagu Opera or the Grand Theater Book Hall to listen to Pingtan, a traditional Chinese storytelling performance.

East Gate was the main filming location for the TV series Time Goes By. Quaint residential buildings stretch along the riverside, still inhabited by many locals. Compared to West Gate, it feels more alive with everyday life.
Visit famous spots like the Former Residence of Mao Dun and Xiuzhen Temple, and take a traditional black-awning boat ride to experience the peaceful water town lifestyle. 🚤Stroll along both sides of Dongshi River to reach the key attractions in East Gate. In addition to the Former Residence of Mao Dun, Lizhi Academy, Wood Carving Hall, and Currency Museum, don’t miss the folk performances during the day: 🎭The boxing boat in the commercial area, pole boat at Fortune Bay, flower-drum opera at the ancient stage, and shadow puppetry at Hanlin Mansion—all vividly showcase Wuzhen’s traditional folk culture.
Due to safety regulations, accommodations are not permitted within the East Gate scenic area. However, some locals run simple guesthouses nearby. This is not just a travel destination—it’s a soulful dialogue about time and life. ⏳🌿As your footsteps begin, the rustic homes of East Gate unfold like vivid scrolls of Jiangnan. West Lake Scenic Area (Free entry) 4.7/5 🌊🌸🧭
West Lake is undoubtedly the symbol of Hangzhou’s beauty. The renowned “Ten Scenes of West Lake” encircle the lake, blending nature and culture to form the core of Hangzhou tourism. You don’t need to visit every spot—just spend half a day or a full day wandering by the lake, and no matter how you explore, it will bring joy and peace of mind.
Overview of West Lake 🚶♂️🚲🚤
You can explore West Lake by walking, taking a boat, riding an electric shuttle, driving, or cycling. Electric shuttles are convenient and effortless, with hop-on hop-off tour vehicles running around the lake. Cycling along the lake is romantic and relaxing, with many public bike rental points available. If you’d like a boat ride, there are about ten piers around the lake with different boat types and routes. It’s highly recommended to visit the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon by boat and enjoy the lake views on the way. Or hire a rowboat and have a boatman take you for a more flexible experience.
Northern Scenic Route 🌁🏞️🏯
The northern shore of West Lake features many attractions. Typically, you start at Broken Bridge in the northeast and head west to Yue Fei Temple. You can stroll along the Bai Causeway to Solitary Hill and visit cultural landmarks such as Xiling Seal Art Society, Zhejiang Provincial Museum, China Seal Museum, and Fanghe Pavilion. Try the authentic West Lake vinegar fish at the famous restaurant Lou Wai Lou. Exit the island via Xiling Bridge, and not far away are the Yue Fei Temple and Quyuan Garden of Lotus.
Southeast Shoreline (Hubin Road - Nanshan Road) 🎼⛩️🎇
Another popular area is along Hubin Road to Nanshan Road on the southeast shore. Hubin Road connects the downtown Hangzhou area and the lake, offering views of the lake, boat piers, and the iconic music fountain. This area allows for quick access to the city center, making it suitable for those with limited time.
Su Causeway (Free entry) 4.7/5 🌸🌿🏞️
Su Causeway runs from north to south across West Lake. It was built during the tenure of Su Dongpo as an official in Hangzhou, and is also known as “Su Gong Causeway.” It’s particularly charming in spring, hence the name “Spring Dawn at Su Causeway.” Nearly 3 km long, it features tree-lined roads on both sides. You can walk and enjoy views of scenic spots like Three Pools Mirroring the Moon and Leifeng Pagoda, or cycle when it’s not crowded.
🏞️🌉🚶♂️Attractions Along the Way
🌉📍From south to north, the Su Causeway features six stone bridges: Yingbo, Suolan, Wangshan, Yadi, Dongpu, and Kuahong.
🌅🖼️👑Between Yingbo Bridge and Suolan Bridge is the entrance to the famous spot “Viewing Fish at Flower Pond.” From Yingbo Bridge, you can catch a glimpse of it. Yadi Bridge offers a panoramic view of West Lake, and to the south stands the Imperial Stele Pavilion where Emperor Kangxi inscribed the plaque “Spring Dawn at Su Causeway.” Dongpu Bridge is a great spot to watch the sunrise over the lake.
🏯🎭🌸At both ends of the Su Causeway, attractions are relatively concentrated. At the southern entrance, you’ll find the Su Dongpo Memorial Hall, which is free to visit and just 500 meters from Leifeng Pagoda and Jingci Temple. Near the northern entrance are Yue Fei Temple, Quyuan Garden for Viewing Lotus, Solitary Hill Park, and the performance venue of “Impression West Lake.”
🌸🌿🌞Natural Scenery
In spring, the scenery of Su Causeway is enchanting, perfect for walks and photography. In summer, vast stretches of lotus flowers bloom on the western side. Strolling along the lakeside paths on both sides of the causeway is very pleasant, and if you’re tired, you can rest on one of the benches.
📋🚏🚲Travel Tips
🚌👣⌛Since motor vehicles are not allowed on Su Causeway, walking is the most common way to get around. If you walk without stopping, it usually takes about an hour to complete the route. To save time, you can take the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus around the lake.
🚴♂️🙅♀️🚶♂️Riding a bicycle along the causeway is also a great experience, but on holidays when it’s crowded, avoid cycling—otherwise, you’ll constantly be maneuvering through people.
🖌️🌄📖Arriving at West Lake feels like stepping into a living landscape painting. It is the soul of Hangzhou, where every scene tells a story that spans a thousand years, captivating every traveler who visits.
💎🏞️📚West Lake is not only a dazzling gem bestowed by nature upon Hangzhou, but also a dreamland where culture and history intertwine. With its unparalleled beauty and profound cultural heritage, it gently embraces every visitor.
🌬️💧🧘♀️Strolling along the lakeshore, a gentle breeze caresses your face, bringing a pure breath of nature that seems to cleanse the dust of the soul. The emerald lake ripples softly against the shore, like nature’s melodious symphony, soothing the spirit and easing the mind. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let the freshness and tranquility permeate every cell, feeling an intimate dialogue with nature.

Zhouzhuang (Ticket Included) 4.5/5
Zhouzhuang is a world-famous water town in Jiangnan, with water lanes crisscrossing throughout the town. The ancient Ming and Qing buildings are built along the river. The famous twin bridges, painted by artist Chen Yifei, depict the gentleness of small bridges and flowing water. South of the town, Nanhu Lake is vast and beautiful. When the town lights up at night, it reveals an entirely different kind of charm.
Highlights of the Tour
Ancient Courtyards in the Brick Carved Gateways under the Jiangnan Mist
Zhouzhuang’s buildings are primarily traditional Jiangnan residences, with nearly a hundred ancient courtyards, most of which date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town is surrounded by water, with waterways arranged in a “井” shape, forming a characteristic pattern of streets by the water and markets by the streets. In the water lanes of Zhouzhuang, 14 ancient stone bridges from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties are well-preserved. The ancient bridges, waterways, and homes embody the true essence of “small bridges and flowing water with people living along the banks.”
Visit Ancient Residences, Follow in the Footsteps of Famous Figures
There are many ancient residential buildings and historical sites in Zhouzhuang, with the most famous being Zhang Hall, Shen Hall, and the mysterious underwater tomb of Shen Wansan, believed to be the tomb of his clothing and cap. Shen Hall was built by the descendants of Shen Wansan and is one of the best-preserved Qing Dynasty residences in Zhouzhuang. The structure is exquisite, allowing visitors to explore the lifestyle of a wealthy Jiangnan family. You can even touch the legendary “treasure basin.” Zhang Hall, originally named Yishun Hall, was built during the Ming Dynasty, later passed to the Zhang family during the Qing Dynasty, and renamed Zhang Hall, which is a typical example of a Ming Dynasty official residence.
The Rowing Boat in the Water Lanes, A Beautiful Dream of the Water Town
Zhouzhuang Ancient Town is not large, with a length and width of about 1 to 2 kilometers, making it possible to explore the entire town on foot. However, it is highly recommended to experience a boat ride along the waterways. The boats in the ancient town are wooden boats covered with Jiangnan blue floral cloth. Each boat can accommodate 1 to 6 people, and the boatwoman often sings small tunes from Kunqu opera, adding a distinct water town charm to the experience.
Only This Zhouzhuang” Immersive Multi-Dimensional Space Drama
The “Only This Zhouzhuang” immersive multi-dimensional space drama aims to immerse the audience in a journey of “meeting oneself” through the concept of dreams within dreams. 🌙💭
The performance breaks the traditional boundaries of drama and stage performances, exploring themes of space and time through deconstruction and reconstruction. It blends Song Dynasty aesthetics with multi-dimensional technological creativity, leading the audience on a journey beyond three-dimensional space and time, offering a transcendent emotional and spiritual experience. 🎭✨
Story Background
The story tells of a young traveler named Zhou He, who comes to Zhouzhuang for an astronomy enthusiast meeting. In a dream, he witnesses the life and dreams of a Song Dynasty man, also named Zhou He, from 900 years ago, and engages in conversations with various famous people of Zhouzhuang across time and space. 🌌🔮
In the 80-minute experience, the audience enters the dreams of both the contemporary Zhou He and the Song Dynasty Zhou He, following the four chapters of “Old Dreams, Into the Painting, Expedition, and Seeking the Path,” stepping into the world of Song Dynasty aesthetics, the ancient water town of 900 years ago, and witnessing the pursuits of Zhouzhuang’s old friends. 🌠⛵
Old Dream
Welcome to Zhouzhuang! At the offline gathering of astronomy enthusiasts, you meet a young man named Zhou He, who casually picks up a copy of the “Zhouzhuang Town Chronicle” at the front desk, intending to flip through it before bed. That night, all the guests in the hotel mysteriously enter the same dream, and you all enter Zhou He’s dream. 🌙📖
Outside, the rain falls softly, and Zhou He, with his book as his pillow, dreams of returning to the water town from 900 years ago, where he meets a Song Dynasty man with the same name as his own. Come, let’s enter the dream together. 🌧️💤
Highlight: An all-encompassing immersive theatrical performance presented in a dome of light and shadow, offering you a stunning visual experience. 🌟🎥
Into the Painting
A dream within a dream, you hurry along with a lantern, following Zhou He’s steps as you enter the dream of the Song Dynasty man with the same name. The dream is filled with memories—of the vibrant feasts in ancient Tokyo, of meeting and parting with the court singer Tao Xi, and of promises and entrusted duties. 🎶💃When the dream ends, Zhou He from the Song Dynasty finds his answer in the moment between leaving and staying: “Beyond the Jiangnan water town lies another beautiful landscape, why does Brother Zhou remain here?” Because “Where the heart is at peace, that is my home.” 🏞️❤️
Highlight: Live restoration of the twelve sets of court music, with Song Dynasty palace dancers gracefully performing under the light and shadow, showcasing the splendor of the imperial court. 🥁💃
Expedition
In the fragments of time, modern Zhou He follows the light, witnessing the half-life story of Song Zhou He, who remained in Zhouzhuang. To protect the water town, he sends his son, Zhou Xi, into the military. Drunk, he lights a lantern to inspect his sword, and in the dream, hears the sound of war horns and sees the battle camps. Zhou Xi is brave and skilled in war, leading 300 Zhouzhuang warriors to join the northern anti-Jin forces. ⚔️🚢
Highlight: Board the “warship” and experience the intense anti-Jin battle, feeling the atmosphere of the war with wind, rain, lightning, thunder, and cannon fire. ⚔️🌩️
Seeking the Path
The ginkgo tree planted by Zhouzhuang’s elders to commemorate the anti-Jin warriors has become a sacred tree where the people of the water town pray for blessings. In the dream, the boundaries of time and space dissolve, and modern Zhou He takes up the guiding lantern to wait under the ginkgo tree. 🌳✨Zhang Han, Zhou Di Gong Lang, Shen Wansan… old friends from Zhouzhuang enter the dream, telling of the sentiment of “Only This Zhouzhuang.” As the day breaks, we all wake up from our own dreams, reflecting on this “waking dream” where we once met each other. 🌅💭
Highlight: The sacred tree is surrounded by hundreds of lotus lanterns, illuminating lost wanderers, blending reality, illusion, and dreams. 🪔🌸
Leisure Life, Strolling to Enjoy Relaxation
Zhouzhuang is a perfect place to unwind. In the morning, you can enjoy the breeze by the river and try some local Jiangnan breakfast. During the day, take a stroll around the town, visit a teahouse to enjoy some traditional opera and tea, or go to a café to read a book and drink coffee. In the evening, you can enjoy a drink at a quiet bar, many of which feature live singing or performances. 🌅☕🎶
